The Art of Listening
The Art of Listening was a unique telephone engagement project designed to create meaningful works of art based on gentle, 1-to-1 conversations between participants and artists.
How it works
Book a call with one of our artists for a chat about special memories, significant life events or simply cherished, everyday experiences.
After your conversation, the artist will take the key elements of your chat and translate it into a bespoke artwork for you to keep and enjoy.

A light-hearted chat about your mood, musical tastes, ideas and state of mind will be transformed into a song! Chez will call you back once the song is complete and perform it for you in a very special live performance. We’ll also send you the song on CD or audio file.

Marilyn will chat with you about treasured memories, places and experiences to create a beautiful watercolour painting or a personalised hand drawn map.

Carrie is inspired by mindfulness and her gentle prompts will encourage you to be engaged and absorbed ‘in the moment’ with her as you explore your creative ideas together. Carrie will use her traditional handicraft skills alongside repurposed materials to create a bespoke piece that reflects your ideas.

Gill will transform your conversation into an audio story or song which will be shared with you on CD or audio file. She might encourage you to find meaningful photos or objects as conversation starters, or she can send you some postcards as prompts for your chat.

Sam makes collages in a quick, responsive way with sensitivity and humour. She will combine words & images in response to your conversation, to create a thoughtful, hopeful and visually pleasing collage for you to keep.

Erica loves stories and creates drawings, prints, embroideries, and soft fabric dolls inspired by history and by folk & fairy tales. She will carefully listen to your memories to make an artwork that you will feel connected to.

Lisa is an experienced participatory artist, with a unique skill for initiating joyful experiences which unlock creativity, excite curiosity, and generate dialogue. Following your call with Lisa, she will create a bespoke artistic memento for you to keep - this might take the form of a story in prose, or something a little more poetic, or even a song!
