Forest Faces of the Future
Year 6 children hold the future of the Forest in their hands. As they transition from primary to secondary school and begin considering their own futures, the decisions they make will increasingly shape the social and cultural landscape of our entire community.
That’s why we are collecting the self-portraits of every Year 6 pupil from across the Forest of Dean – to create a unique exhibition that will serve as a powerful visual reminder of the size and diversity of this next generation of Foresters.
Participation in this project will help your Year 6 pupils to reflect on their identity and to consider their ongoing role as a citizen of the Forest.
Teachers Resource Pack
We know that as teachers, your time and resources are precious. That’s why we’ve created this handy activity pack, complete with an activity guide, PowerPoint presentation and printable worksheet, to make your participation in the project easy, fun and effective.
The activity is designed to be delivered within a single lesson. It links to the KS2 national curriculum for Art & Design by helping pupils to learn, understand and apply concepts and information related to the historical, cultural and artistic development of self-portraiture.
The activity session is divided into three parts, to promote knowledge, comprehension and application:
Part 1: Introduces the concept of a self-portrait and describes the styles and works of three famous artists (knowledge)
Part 2: Encourages your pupils to recall and discuss what they have learned (comprehension)
Part 3: Involves your pupils creating their own self-portrait (application)

Next steps
Once you have completed the activity with your Year 6 pupils, please scan their self-portraits and email them to us at forestfaces@wyldwoodarts.co.uk (you do not need to send us the completed worksheets – just the self-portraits).
Your pupils’ work will be featured alongside the self-portraits of Year 6 pupils from primary schools across the Forest of Dean, in an exhibition launching in September 2021.
We will be promoting the exhibition with the release of a short film, which will showcase the self-portraits alongside a series of poems written and performed by Year 6 pupils.
We will keep you updated with details about our exhibition launch and will send you a link to the film and gallery, to pass on to each of your young artists (who will by then have begun their journey into secondary school).
Forest Faces of the Future is connected to our wider project ‘100 Forest Faces’ which you can view on Instagram and is funded by Heritage Lottery Foundation through the Foresters’ Forest Project, led by Forestry England.
